Yeah. Sprites are restricted like that. Although there are styles, they are made by the company. Not the spriter. Someone could obviously say "That's clearly Megaman 7 style" or "That's Sonic Battle Style." The spriter is just taking someone else's style and changing what the characters look like.
But it's not the same in drawing. When you draw, the art is all of your own. Well...unless you are one of them tracing ass holes.
