Planet Make-up
The surface of Thearin is uninhabitable, though this was not always so. The lands were once prosperous and fertile. The cause of the destruction of the lands was a second moon that was drawn into orbit around the planet after a larger asteroid’s path came too close to the planet’s gravitational pull. The tidal force caused by this new moon wreaked havoc upon the surface, throwing the flow of the crust upon the planet core out of whack and triggering massive earthquakes and severe storms with deadly forced winds. The ancient Magi, fearing what would become of the people, wove spells to salvage as much of the lands as they could, drawing them into the skies. Since that time, the people have lived on these sky islands, the turmoil of the lands contained to the surface while sulfuric clouds from the magma fields that now freely flow hover under the floating cities.
Race
The D’Vatar are mostly human in appearance. Even as such, differences include having ears that taper into a small point rather than being rounded as well as unusually coloured eyes, such as silver or light violet. They have pale, almost creamy coloured skin that could be considered fair and hair is quite often a very light blonde or almost white, though other colours are not completely rare.
Women will average a height of about five and a half feet at maturity, while men will average at about six feet and four inches. As with any, this various with each individual, just as the body structure does. They have a life span of nearly two-hundred years. Children will grow at the same rate that a human child might, though their biology slows upon reaching maturity at the age of sixteen.
The D’Vatar tend to be a proud people, having a fondness for beauty and the arts, whether it’s a finely crafted piece of jewelry or a poem woven into song.
Culture
The people of Thearin, the D’Vatar, are ruled by a hierarchy. The royal family, Siamendes, see over all proceedings within the lands, though it’s the noble families that care for each district and see that things are kept in good spirit and repair. Traditionally, the eldest son of the royal family inherits the throne once the current ruler abdicates or passes on, though it is not unheard of for the magnate to choose a successor before hand should the eldest son be found or thought unfit to rule. Generally, the D’Vatar are a peaceful people, though there is some discord between noble families as each vie for power over the others.
The D’Vatar are a people of magic, though there are few willing to undergo the harsh training of the Magi council to further their abilities. As such, the use of magic among the common people is normally fairly basic. The children of the noble and royal family are required to learn the use of magic in order to keep the peace and to better protect themselves from assassins and traitors. Though it is considered magic, it is essentially just the manipulation of various elements and spirits to one’s will.
One thing that is the same among the D’Vatar is that each child gains a Rakar at birth. These Rakar are essentially spirits that act as a familiar or guide to the D’Vatar that they are bonded with and because of this bond, the Rakar have corporal forms. An unfortunate effect of this bond is that any injury sustained by one is similarly suffered by the other. As such, the death of one results in the death of the other. Until a D’Vatar child reaches maturity, their Rakar will constantly shift forms at the change of the child’s mood and whims. Upon reaching adulthood, the Rakar settles into one form that is often a representation of their bond’s personality. Rakar are most often in the forms of animals and while it is rare for this to be otherwise, it is not unheard of.
The D’Vatar have no religion and worship no gods or deities, though they are not without belief, having respect for the energies and spirits of the land.
The D’Vatar cities are truly a sight to behold. They hold to their love of beauty, keeping their beloved cities clean and full of life with gardens that the public can visit. There are many shops that boast of fine clothing or jewels, not to mention many different foods for one to feast on.
Technology
The D’Vatar are not as technologically advanced as most might be as they rely more on magic to get by and deal with things, they still have use of air ships to travel from land to land as the different continents are distanced from each other within the air. They do have the capability of space travel, having bartered some with other planets, though they are currently busy with trying to find some way to make the planet's surface habitable again.
Military
As the law has been for many years, it is required for boys to receive militia training from the age of thirteen to the age of seventeen. Upon completing this mandatory training, they can then choose whether they wish to stay as part of the Order of Two Moons or to leave and pursue a trade of their choice. While they will allow girls who wish to train as well, there tend to be few who wish to do so. Those who carry on further in their training expand on their knowledge of combative strategies and the proper uses of various weapons. The Order of Two Moons is the royal militia that deals in keeping peace between the lands and protecting the royal family, though they are not the only militia. Each noble family has their own personal armies to put to use if they so need it.
