The term "Energy-Based" focuses on the use of one's body and stamina as a sword and shield. How they are used depends on the location and species in which they were learned from.
Spirit Energy
Often identified as gray magic, spirit energy involves the use of emotions to project elemental spells for use in offensive and defensive situations.
There are four basic emotions that exist in the hearts and minds of many species, each with their own spiritual color and element.
Fury (Red): Associated with aggression, rage, and anger. It controls fire and lightning-based elements.
Mourn (Blue): Associated with sadness, sorrow, and depression. It controls ice and wind-based elements.
Sly (Black): Associated with deseption and sneakiness. It controls terra-based elements, and specializes in creating barriers that repel projectiles back at attackers, teleportation, and resurrection of death.
Chivalry (White): Associated with kindness and selflessness. It controls galactic-based elements, and specializes in healing wounds, curing illnesses, and boosting the status of whomever the caster chooses.
Black and white magic focuses more in the use of elementals than seperating which is holy and which is witchcraft.
White mages combine their elements with healing spells, using the warmth of fire, or the coolness of ice to calm the wounded as their injuries are being healed, while using lightning to revive a body that has died, but is still physically intact. Many have been known to use the ray of the sun to bath and heal a decimated landscape.
Black mages combine their elements with barriers, adding more harm to enemies while repelling their attacks at the same time. When boosting the status of those they choose, they also add protection from a variety of elements for as long as the caster stays focused on them. They are more aggressive with their elemental spells, using them to attack enemies more than protect themselves and their parties.
