Space battles are fought in a very unique way across the galaxy, and warfare is usually standardized. The following are categorized from smallest to largest.
Fighters/Bombers
Fighters and bombers are usually used to screen enemy fire away from the mechs. Fighters are fast, nimble and lightly armed. They do not carry enough firepower to take down a ship but they are highly effective at destroying other fighters and guarding bombers. Bombers do not bomb capital ships as they are too small to do any real damage. They are outfitted for destroying mechs as well as frigates. They are slower than fighters so they always need an escort.
Mechs
Mechs are extremely dangerous and complex weapons in the right hands. Mechs do not have tracking capable of hitting a fighter though they can hit a slow moving bomber. Mech are primarily used to destroy other Mechs and especially Lancer ships. Mechs can be outfitted with so many weapons configurations as well as the general complexity of the machine requires that each mech has a Operator stationed aboard their aircraft carrier to adjust settings and monitor equipment.
Lancers
Lancers are small frigates made specifically to shoot down aircraft. These ships bristle with fast tracking guns that can easily kill bombers and fighters. These ships are quick and are hard to target by capital ships. The armor of a mech is usually too thick for their light guns to punch through. Frigates are also highly qualified for sinking a Lancer.
Frigates
Frigates come in many shapes and their roles vary greatly. From LRM missile ships to fast moving gunships, these ships are made in many flavors. The hulls of these ships are too thick for fighters to damage and only Mechs outfitted with heavy weaponry can sink such a ship. A frigates worst nightmare is a bomber. These ships are too hard for most frigates to hit and the high yield bombs bombers carry can easily destroy their hull. Other frigates are also well known at sinking each other.
Destroyers
Destroyers are light capital ships built to provide fire support for battleships. These ships are not capable of hitting anything smaller than a frigate but are quite adapt at destroying other destroyers as well as wearing down battleships.
Battleships
Battleships are the pride and joy of any fleet. Battleships are filled with the biggest guns, the best missile launches and the best trained crew. These ships contain a crew of at least 500 and are capable of many roles. These ships are mostly used to destroy other battleships as well as destroyers and aircraft carriers. These are also the only ships capable of destroying a space station effectively as well as planetary bombardment.
Carriers
These ships are the mobile command post for the commanders of the fleet, though some prefer the battleships. These massive ships are outfitted with the best sensors. They carry all Fighters, Bombers and Mechs into battle and are usually capable of carrying 30 of each. These ships have only a few missile launchers and anti aircraft guns. They rely on the other ships for their protection.
