www.microsoft.com/surface/youtube.com/watch?v=Cog8b8ojji0As everyone has already noticed, in a civilization like Earth's human one, technology advances in a curving, sloped manner. The advancement of technology quickens, instead of advancing in a steady rate. This is clearly been shown recently in the past years, in different revolutions of science and research. And now, we're bridging into what we've known as the Sci-Fi future. Motion sensor and touch-screen technology are the kinds of things that are becoming an everyday appearance. Microsoft Surface is a table (or counter, or other surface) multi-touch-screen computer, or computer-like machine. It's planned for a release this winter of 2007, but for a while it'll obviously only be used in the likes of expensive hotels, restraunts, business conference rooms, etc. However, just like computers did a few decades ago, it'll probably slowly escalate to a more public level. And the fact that it can relate to and is compatible to other electronic devices, or even non-electronic devices like wine glasses, gives it an even more everyday-use. This forum is too quiet and we need something to discuss. Something that can go off-topic. And here it is.

I like to think of my Wii as a miniature PC.
Right, back on topic. It's rather obvious that PC and Mac are eventually going to run the world. PC already has the market business, while Mac serves as entertainment with their i products. I'm not all up to date with the world though, so I don't know everything there is to know. I'm a hardcore gamer, and that's all I'll ever be.

As interesting as that is it's not very practical for home use.

Mage: Well, this MicroSoft Surface sort've reminds me of the touchscreen of the new iPhone. I wouldn't be surprised if it was very compatible with it, as both have a lot of functions.
Zaku: Yeah, I was thinking the same thing too. I could see this being very useful in hotel rooms. Ordering movies, activating fold-out beds, getting the time for breakfast, calling room-service. Perhaps we'll even be able to order food, if the Microsoft Surface shows up in restraunts.
However, there aren't that many uses for home. They would have to add more features. Not only that, but it would need some sort of software system. If you can add programs via CDs or microchips or something, that would allow for more uses. That way, third-party developers can make Surface versions of their programs to use on it.
Unfortunately, programs like Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Frontpage, Excel, Notepad, or any other basic program that required typing would be hard if not impossible to do on Surface, without a keyboard.

Psh is what I say about this. They're taking tablet pc technology, making it into a table, and saying LOOK! INNOVATION! I mean, sure its cool and all, but if there's any hype about this its too much.

I was gonna bring something similar up. I wouldn't be suprised if Nintendo fanboys said things like "ZOMG they're stealing Nintendo's innovation!11!1!1"
Despite being a Nintendo fan myself, that's complete bullcrap. Touch screen technology has been around way before the DS. Speaking of which, multi-touch touchscreens have been out before the DS, and DS is a single-touch touchscreen.
So, I'm not really hyped about the technology, just the fact that it'll be public and have multiple uses, soon.

Everyone knows the touch screen was used for those games you find in resturantes. If not, then I've got some brainwashing to do.

You don't know? Every resturante I go to has either a stall or a monitor at the bar table that has a shit load of games you can play using the touch screen. Ranging from Solitair to Word Search to "Boxi"(Puzzle Game) to Football and other stuff. You've never seen one?

I live in WV. We are too poor for city people technology. So I have never seen those games either.
